Generally, in Africa, the kingship stool still holds great significance because they are believed to be the custodian of traditions and cultures, but it must also be made known that the position is not what it was before the advent of the colonial masters, in those days kings were treated just like the governors or presidents of today.
In Nigeria here, in particular, our kings are very powerful and it has been alleged that many of them possess metaphysical powers, the mere appearance of some kings can create panic in the heart of a timid person due to what they usually wear as their traditional outfits.
Despite the position of the Ooni of Ife and the Alaafin of Oyo amongst the other Oba's in Nigeria, they still dress in a very simple way even during ceremonial functions, but one king that looks very intimidating in his physical appearance when fully dressed in his ceremonial attire is the Oba of Benin.
Mere looking at the Oba pictures alone, he can still manage to strike fear in the heart of many, in Benin, the Oba is seen as a representative of the supreme deity and they are seen as a god in their own right.
To hit my point home, take a look at these pictures of the current ruler of Benin, Oba Eheneden Erediauwa, and see for yourself how intimidating he looks.
This first-class Oba is 67 years old, and he commands the respects of his people and subordinates equally.
What do you think of his scary appearance?
Do you think his costume is too heavy?
