Since 1999, No President-elect Has Received Transition Documents Without Being Sworn-In - Fabiyi

A few hours ago, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Oladimeji Fabiyi came out to lampoon the Muhammadu Buhari-led APC government for conducting a handover of transition documents to the President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu without being sworn into office.

Recall that at a ceremony organized by the office of the Secretary-General of the Federation (SGF) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Thursday, Buhari handed over the transition documents of his government to Tinubu. The President also conferred on the former Lagos governor the highest honor in the land which is that of the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR).

However, while speaking in an interview on Africa Independent Television's 'Kaakaki' program on Friday morning, Fabiyi, who is a spokesman for the PDP Presidential Campaign Council, insisted that Thursday's handover ceremony violated the Constitution and democratic traditions dating back to 1999.

He said; "In this country, we have a history about how things should be done. And when we talk about strengthening our institutions, I think every president and leader, when leaning office, should be able to do things that further strengthen those institutions. What happened yesterday was not good and Nigerians are not happy about it and the main question has been; why the rush?

There are still issues of legitimacy but whether anybody likes it or not, Bola Tinubu is the President-elect. Nobody is controverting that. But we should try to be responsible as a government. What happened on Thursday was unconstitutional and undermined the very democratic institution that has existed for decades. In all the government transitions that I have witnessed right from 1999 to date, no President-elect was given transition documents without being sworn into office first. Even when Buhari was coming into office in 2015, this was not how it was done. So, why doing it before May 29? What is the reason for the rush?"
