The opposition party would hold its convention in October and preparation seems to be in place for the exercise. Wike would be at the forefront of the exercise and this would make him to inadvertently commit at least one serious political error. He would want to put everything in place and in the process he would make mistakes.
Nyesom Wike, the Rivers State governor, was actively involved in the removal of Uche Secondus. He insisted that the former national chairman must leave power till a court suspended Uche Secondus. Then, Wike would also take part in the replacement of Uche Secondus and in the process, Wike would make the mistake.
The southern governors have asked the major political parties to zone their tickets to the southern part of the country. This demand is realistic, but Wike may make mistake that would foil the whole plan of the southern governors.
The next national chairman of the PDP should come from northern Nigeria, and this would enable the presidential ticket to be ceded to the southern part of Nigeria. But it would be a mistake if Wike thinke a southern politician should be fixed into that position. It is pertinent to categorically state that Wike shouldn't even participate in the selection of the new chairman of the party.
Expectedly, no zone can have both the national chairman and the presidential candidate. That is why the PDP chose a northerner (Atiku Abubakar) for the 2019 presidential election. And Mr. Uche who is from southern region was the national chairman.
Mr. Nyesom Wike needs to pay attention to northern region as far as the national chairmanship of the party is concerned. Top northern politicians including Rabiu Kwankwaso, David Mark, Sule Lamido among others should be considered for the job. This would ultimately enable southern Nigeria to produce the next president.
The roles that Wike played in the issue of Uche Secondus are still fresh in the memory. As a strategic politician, he needs to make sure that the national chairmansbip is pushed to north. But if he supports or backs a southerner for the job, the northern leaders would definitely have the presidential ticket.
Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, a former Osun State governor, has said he would like to become the national chairman of the party. And a report of the Punch Newspaper linked Mr. Ayodele Fayose to the seat. But one thing that would become a mistake is if Wike allows either Oyinlola or Fayose to become the national chairman.
