Nasiru Dambatta, a political analyst based in Kaduna, speaks with Ibrahim Hassan-Wuyo about the possibility of former Zamfara state Governor, now Senator Abdulaziz Yari, becoming the next President of the Senate.
Why are you supporting Senator Abdul'Aziz Yari when the APC appears to have already decided on Godswill Akpabio?
First and foremost, Yari is a Northwest candidate with extensive executive and legislative experience. Second, the North-West has consistently provided the highest percentage of votes (more than 30%), outnumbering every other geopolitical zone in the country.
Let us not forget that the president-elect received 8.79 million votes. That is how the Northwest came out on top with 30.0% of all votes cast in the presidential election. Tinubu's home constituency of South West came in second with 25.9%. The North Central region finished third with 20.0%, while the North East region finished fourth with 13.5%. The South South came in fifth place with 9.10%, while the South East came in sixth place with only 1.45%. On the scale of electoral fortunes in that election, Yari's Northwest outperforms all others. As a result, our Northwest Progressives Forum advised the president-elect not to support the underperformers The presidential elections take place in a geopolitical zone. We continue to believe that Yari is the best of the race participants. Though massive protests against the APC's choice of Senate Presidency and Speakership are still raging in the media, our position is not prejudicial to the ruling party's position because the ruling party is also entitled to their opinion in a democracy. I saw Southwest governors from Tinubu's district rejecting the APC position. I saw a warning from the Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) against what they see as a direct imposition on the National Assembly. As some newspapers claimed, the story is no less different in the House of Representatives Rt Hon Gbajabiamila's current leadership is being targeted by underground movements. It is now extremely difficult to conclude that the APC's final decision was sufficiently popular.
