Former deputy governor of Oyo state and current PDP National Vice Chairman Southwest, H.E Taofeek Arapaja has criticized PDP National Chairman, Uche Secondus, accusing him of being a member of the PDP during the day who then transforms to become an APC member at night.
The former deputy governor to Alao Akala was responding to questions this Saturday morning on a Fresh FM Ibadan program anchored by Mayor Isaac Brown. Among those who posed questions to Arapaja included Oyo state Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ Chairman Mr Demola Babalola, Mr Bisi Oladele who is the Southwest bureau chief of The Nation Newspapers, as well as Dare Adekanbi of The Tribune Newspapers.
Recently, Arapaja joined the growing ranks of PDP stalwarts who have been calling on the National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus to resign his position. In fact, the former Oyo deputy governor alleged that Secondus was working for the interests of the ruling APC in order to destroy the opposition PDP.
Asked to explain the reasons why he, like several others, also believes that Uche Secondus was working for the APC, Arapaja responded: "I am close to many of them in that National Working Committee (of the PDP). And by virtue of my current position as the National Vice Chairman, Southwest, I am able to read the body language of many of them and I can tell you that the National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus is too comfortable. Considering what the PDP as a party is currently experiencing with regards to defections, the chairman's body language gives an impression of somebody who is not bothered. In addition, given what I know, I can tell you that Uche Secondus is working for the interests of the APC in order to destroy the PDP.
"How can the PDP lose three governors to the APC within a space of three months and yet when we go to meetings, the chairman appears to indicate that all is well within the party. He is just so happy to be called the National Chairman. And still he wants to return for a second term. This indicates to me that he is happy with the defections currently going on. We know many of them and where they truly belong, they are openly PDP but secretly APC. They are PDP during the day and they are APC during the night." He said.
At this point the anchor of the radio program, Isaac Brown then alleged that possibly Arapaja was trying to take his own pound of flesh from Uche Secondus because the PDP Chairman supported another candidate during the PDP Southwest election that produced Arapaja as Vice Chairman. In reaction, Arapaja alleged that Prince Uche Secondus showed biased leadership during that PDP Southwest election.
"As National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus was supposed to provide a level playing field during that election. But no, he let it show that he was in support of my opponent. That wasn't supposed to be. However, that's not my concern for now. After I won, I decided that we all must work together, both winner and loser. But the problem is that the PDP is in crisis and the impression given by the Chairman is that all is well. That is what worries me and that is what worries many others who are concerned for the direction the party is headed under the current Chairman.
"Normally it would have been easy to allow him finish the three months left of his current tenure but that is a long time, given the circumstances. We're only talking about governors who have defected from the party, what about National Assembly members. They are equally defecting in good numbers as well. And if we allow Secondus to continue and to complete his tenure which will expire in three months, who knows how many more defections are going to take place?" He added.
