As reported by the Punch Newspaper, the opposition party would now pick its candidate for the vacant seat of the national chairman from the northern region. The newspaper gave the report after the party had initially asked the southwest region to produce the next chairman for the party.
Recall that the seat became vacant after the suspension of the immediate past Chairman, Mr. Uche Secondus. His suspension and final removal created a vacuum which needed to be filled before the 2023 general elections that the party would expect to win.
But the northern leaders need to reject the latest decision of the party based on two reasons. Once the reasons are considered, the PDP leaders from north would be left with no choice but to ask the party to go back to the initial plans to pick the new chairman from southwest.
The first argument that the northern leaders should present is that Mr. Uche Secondus wasn't allowed to finish his tenure as the chairman of the opposition party before he was asked to leave the stage. Of course, Mr. Secondus got his opponents from the southern region, but the issue may likely be repeated if north produces the national chairman.
North has a number of politicians who can work to become the national chairman of the party. Mr. Rabiu Kwankwaso, a former Kano State governor, Mr. David Mark, a former senate president can become the chairman. But the northern PDP leaders should reject the slot on the ground that since Uche Secondus wasn't allowed to finish his administration, south should still be allowed to lead the party.
The second reason is that the Northern Elders Forum has said that northern leaders would contest for the seat of the president again. Even the northern governors reached the resolution as well when they met in Kaduna few days ago. Their meeting was more or less a reaction to the demands and steps taken by the southern governors.
And since the northern governors have talked in a voice, it is now important for the top PDP leaders to unanimously reject the chairmanship and strongly demand the presidential ticket. The PDP has so many strong party leaders in north. Mr. Bukola Saraki, Aminu Tambuwal and former vice president Atiku Abubakar are on ground for the party.
The deal is that if the northern region takes the national chairmanship now, it is not a mistake to say that the party will pick a southerner for the presidential race. Hence, the northern leaders should reject the national chairmanship.
