Why Minimum Wages Is Not Implemented Yet In Kwara State

It is no news that Kwara State workers have not been paid the new minimum wages despite the fact the bill has been long signed into law.

Although the state government has explained the reasons behind the delay. The Kwara State Governor, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has finalized with the labour union to conclude of the new template for the payment for the new minimum wages.

Also, since the aftermath of the meeting he held with National Union Of Local Government Employees (NULGE) was to conduct a thorough screening in order to block leakages and inappropriate diversion of public funds by some top officers in the Local government and SUBEB respectively.

That's what prompted the Honourables from state House of Assembly to conclude on doing the screening process to workers of all local government areas, staff of primary and junior secondary schools and Senior Secondary schools across the state.

The meeting which lasted for a week was conducted to know the actual number of active workers in the state in order to relief the monthly allocation for local government of embezzlement, and inappropriate spending.

The committee in charge of screening exercise made known that the screening will be in three phases. They said the first phase requires the screening of staff and results which they have successfully done. Also they mentioned that the second phase will require succinct forensic auditing of each local government account to know the exact amount used for payment of salary and the ones used for running of the affairs in the local government and that used for projects.

The last phase of the screening process will be thorough and is yet to be disclosed on how it will be done. But the committee made known the three phases of screening will last for 6 months after which the minimum wages can be paid. Its hoped that at the end of the screening, there will be sufficient funds to cater for the new minimum wages and embark on community development projects.
