2023: Why The Plan To Set Conditions For APC/PDP's Candidacy By Jega's Group May Be A Good Move

The 2023 elections in Nigeria has raised a lot of arguments among different political groups within the country. The two major political parties in the country (APC and PDP) have not selected their 2023 presidential candidates and many Nigerians are curious to know the people that will represent these two parties.

However, there have been different calls for APC and PDP to zone the 2023 presidential position to the southern part of Nigeria. The southern governors forum led by Governor Akeredolu stated that their zone will produce the next president of Nigeria.

Also, the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) through their spokesman (Hakeem Ahmed-Baba) claimed that the Northern part of Nigeria has the numerical capacity to greatly influence the next presidential election in Nigeria. NEF equally made it clear that no region can produce the next president without the help of other regions.

Nevertheless, despite these arguments, a third political force is emerging within the country. This political movement is allegedly being formed by Attahiru Jega (Former Chairman Of INEC), Pat Utomi and some political leaders across the nation.

This group is planning to unveil a mega political movement known as "Rescue Nigeria Project" on 1st October.

According to a report released by "The Punch", this group formed by Jega and some leaders is set to force political parties to adopt certain conditions in selecting candidates for various public offices during the 2023 general elections in Nigeria.

Usman Bugaje (A member of the group) listed the conditions that political parties must set for aspirants while featuring in a program (Politics Today) on Channels Television. Usman disclosed that they will set conditions for political parties (Including APC and PDP) to prioritise knowledge, competence and character while selecting their candidates.

Nevertheless, I believe that this plan to set conditions for APC and PDP's candidacy by Jega's group may be a good move because it will ensure that weak and incompetent candidates are removed before the election period.

Also, I believe that this plan will help to produce leaders that are capable of solving the security challenges and other issues within the country.

Therefore, I will advise political parties in Nigeria to add some of these conditions or criteria that will be given by Jega's group into their constitution for screening aspirants.

So, what do you think about this plan made by Jega's group to set conditions for political parties concerning the selection of candidates during the 2023 elections?.
