The former deputy senate president, Mr. Ike Ekweremadu, may have opportunities to grab three key political posts in 2023 when the people of the country would participate in another general elections. The powerful federal legislator has become a reference point and it seems he will enjoy some widespread popularity in 2023.
The first major office that may be open to him to grab is the office of the president of the federal republic of Nigeria. The former deputy senate president could be the anticipated successor of President Muhammadu Buhari. And it will intrigue the large Igbo people to have one of their sons occupying the top seat of the country.
The Ohaneze Ndigbo insists that the Igbo people want the presidency and the PDP may yield to the demands made by the Igbo people by presenting Mr. Ike Ekweremadu as the flag bearer of the party in the 2023 presidential election. It is worthwhile to note that the lawmaker is one of the most loyal members of the party.
Of course, he will need the support of powerful leaders of the PDP. If Ekweremadu meets with former president Goodluck Jonathan, he may get the support of the former leader of the country. There is no assurance or indication yet that Jonathan would try his good luck again. Then, he may prefer Ike Ekweremadu, the powerful senator.
Even the demand made by the southern governors could be another avenue for Mr. Ekweremadu to become the PDP presidential candidate. The governors unanimously asked that 2023 presidency should be shifted to the south. Then, if the PDP agrees with the governors, the door is therefore widely open for Ike Ekweremadu.
The second post is at the National Assembly. He served as deputy president of the Senate to both Bukola Saraki and to David Mark. He was committed and faithful to them. He may end up becoming the Senate President of the upper chamber of the National Assembly. He is one of the most experienced senators in the house right now.
His chances of becoming the president of the house hinge on two things. One, he must have won the senatorial district election in his constituency. The second thing is that the opposition party (PDP) must have a simple majority in the upper chamber of the assembly. If these two things happen, Ike Ekweremadu is on his way to head the Senate.
The third key post is the state governor's office. As a vastly experienced senator, Mr. Ike Ekweremadu is really one of the best hands his state may have to rule. There is nothing bad if he is nominated for the PDP governorship ticket and he will surely make the struggling PDP proud in the gubernatorial election.
The Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, will finish his second term in 2023 and he will have to compulsorily hand over to another person because he was first elected in 2015. This would make it unimaginably easier for Mr. Ekweremadu to take over the affairs of the state in 2023 if he has interest in the office.
