The Ekiti State governor, Mr. Kayode Fayemi, has broken silence over the 2023 presidency. The top All Progresives Congress politician revealed his mind to the people when he was granting an interview to a popular television. But if he truly has interest in the job, there are two things he may have to do.
According to the Punch Newspaper, Mr. Fayemi, whose tenure expires next year said that everything was in the hand of God. This shows that he is not over ambitious or desperate to clinch power. It is common among politicians to move up and down for power. Meanwhile, Mr. Fayemi should consider the following steps or things if he has ambition.
The first step he needs to take is to have a meeting with the national leader of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Ahmed Tinubu. It is very crucial for Mr. Fayemi to consult the former Lagos State governor. There might be a deadlock if Mr. Fayemi doesn't carry the former Lagos State governor along.
Mr. Fayemi was in London about two weeks ago to check on the national leader of the APC. Fayemi was there along with the Ondo State governor Rotimi Akeredolu and they took some photos with Tinubu. But that was not enough. It is better for the Ekiti State governor to have a frank and sincere talk with Tinubu and he should seek the opinion of the powerful politician.
If Tinubu is interested in the job, it will not be advisable for Fayemi to throw his hat into the ring. Therefore, the first thing he can do is to have a talk with the national leader of the party.
The second thing is to have a deal with the northern leaders most especially the governors from the zone. It is worthwhile to state that northern region holds the main political strength in the country. The fact that Kano, Katsina and Borno and others have the bulkiest votes makes it easier for the northern leaders to be powerful.
It is not all the leaders who may want to hear the presentation of Fayemi, but he can carefully select the top leaders he will meet. Mr. Nasir El-Rufai, the Kaduna State governor, appears to be a caucus of Fayemi. If the Ekiti State governor can get the support of Nasir El-Rufai, the rest would be very simple.
And while he visits Tinubu for a serious political discussion, Fayemi should beg the former Lagos State governor to help him to talk to the northern leaders most especially the Kano State governor Mr. Umar Ganduje. Recall that the powerful governor has gone to check Tinubu in London. It means Ganduje holds Tinubu in a high esteem.
