It is common knowledge that the candidates for the forthcoming Anambra State, election have unanimously urged the Federal Government to release the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) group, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu from custody. The demand was jointly signed by Ben Etiaba, AA Candidate; Charles Soludo APGA Party; Obinna Uzoh SDP, Akachukwu Nwankpo, ADC; Onyejegbu Okwudili, APM; Ifeanyi Uba, YPP; Andy Uba, APC; Nnamdi Nnawuo, PRP; and Obiora Okonkwo ZLP.
The candidates urged the people of the state, to ensure a peaceful election is observed. They urged supporters and stakeholders to commit to their ideals for peace, and refrain from acts of violence that could affect the smooth conduct of the election. According to Newsonline Nigeria, the candidates asked the Federal Government to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to the council of Traditional Rulers, and the Representatives of Bishop and Igbo Archbishops.

The candidates also urged the Federal Government to demilitarize the Southeast region, to end the confrontation between the Nigerian Army and youths in the region. How the demand for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, has been linked to the Anambra State election has been of a surprise to me. The people of Anambra State have allowed violence to strive in their state when Nnamdi Kanu is from Abia State, why are incessant attacks being witnessed in other Southeast states.
Furthermore, Nnamdi Kanu is not in the custody of the Department of State Services, for solely agitation reasons. Recall that a panel set up by President Muhammadu Buhari indicted Nnamdi Kanu for all the violence in the region, and the murder of security operatives. The Anambra State, governorship candidates ought to know that the case between Nnamdi Kanu and the Federal Government has gone beyond agitation, for secession and the Federal Government will want the law to take its course.

In my opinion, I will say it is sentimental to link Kanu's release to the Anambra State election. Candidates should be concerned about the progress of the Igbo people, and how to resolve the challenges, that have led to the agitation for secession, and providing basic social amenities in Anambra State.
