7 Nigerian Politicians Who Went Abroad To Study In The University

Politicians are persons who are professionally involved in politics by seeking and holding elected seats in government.

There's no sovereign nation without politicians as they are the machineries through which a state is govern.

Getting an education is a prerequisite to holding political offices, no nation will entrust the affairs of its state into the hands of those who are uneducated and unenlightened.

Nigeria is encapsulated with plenty of politicians who hold prominent offices. Although many politicians in Nigeria are University graduates, a number of them did their tertiary programs outside the country.

Having done my homework, check out 7 Nigerian politicians who studied abroad;

1- Olubukola Abubakar Saraki

He was the 13th Senate President of Nigeria from 2015 to 2019 and Chairman of the 8th Nigeria National Assembly. 

He went to London Hospital Medical College of the University of London from 1982 to 1987, where he received a degree in Medicine and Surgery.

2- Bola Tinubu

Tinubu is the national leader of the All Progressive Congress (APC). He was formerly the governor of Lagos State from 1999- 2007.

He graduated in 1979 with a Bachelor's degree in Accounting from the Chicago State University.

3- Kayode Fayemi

He is currently serving as the governor of Ekiti state.

He assumed office on October 2018.

Despite obtaining his bachelor's degree in history, politics and International relations from Obafemi Awolowo University.

Governor Kayode Fayemi earned a PHD degree in King's College, London.

4- Nasir El Rufai

He was previously the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory from 2003 to 2007 and the director of the Bureau of Public Enterprises. But he is currently serving as the governor of Kaduna state.

Rufai obtained a Law Degree from the University of London and a master's degree in public administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government of Harvard University.

5- Adams Oshiomhole 

He previously served as the executive governor of Edo State and was also the former national chairman of the All Progressive Congress (APC).

In 1975, he proceeded to Ruskin College at Oxford, United Kingdom to study industrial relations, majoring in labour economics.

6 - Ahmed Lawan

Lawan is currently the Senate President of Nigeria.

He holds a Doctorate degree in Remote Sensing/GIS from Cranfield University, United Kingdom.

7- Femi Fani-Kayode

A former Minister of Culture and Tourism, Femi Fani-Kayode is an Ile-Ife chieftain of yoruba descent.

Following in the footsteps of his parents and grandparents, Femi Fani-Kayode went to the University of London, School of Oriental and African Studies where he graduated with a law degree in 1983.

Studying outside Nigeria is a privilege not too many people enjoy, but through scholarships, family fortune and other sponsorships, quite a number of persons have been able to achieve their dreams of getting an education abroad.
