Is The Recent Appointment of 5 Female Commissioners Out of 11 In Edo State A Welcome Development?

It is no loners news after 11 months as a second-term Governor, Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki has appointed 11 commissioners to manage various ministries in the state.

The recent appointment has generated a lot of reactions from many Nigerians not because it took the Governor 11 months to appoint them but because out of the 11 commissioners appointed, 5 of them are females.

Gender Activists and social affairs commentators have praised the Governor for appointing females to manage critical sectors of the state.

The five Commissioners that have been screened by the members of Edo State House of Assembly and inaugurated by the Governor are Professor Obehi Akoria (Health), Mrs Otse Momoh-Omorogbe (Budget and Planning).

Others are Dr. Joan Osa Oviawe (Education), Isoken Omo (Physical Planning and Urban Development), and Marie Edeki (Social Development and Gender)

The Governor also appointed Mrs. Ajose-Adeogun as Special Adviser on Strategy, Policy, Projects, and Performance Management.

I think the appointment of five women out of 11 commissioners is a welcome development and a step in the right direction.

The appointment further buttresses the point that all genders are equal and the women should be appointed and elected to manage critical sectors like Education, Health, and Budget.

The recent appointment also proves that women's jobs are beyond the four corners of the kitchen and should always have the same power and voices as men.
