Mr. Godwin Obaseki may not be handling the internal affairs of the Edo State chapter of the PDP well. The party is facing so much problem these days. And the issues can be traced to the victory of the party in 2020. Mr. Obaseki, the state governor is making some serious mistakes.
The governor joined the PDP after he was rejected by his former political camp, the All Progressives Congress. The PDP welcomed him and gave him the ticket for the race so that he would be able to keep his seat. He won the 2020 gubernatorial election through the People's Democratic Party.
But the governor has now said that he would tolerate opposition in the party as far as the Edo State chapter is concerned. It is good that he wants to keep the party united ahead of 2023. But suspending key members may not be the way or method to use. He may even think we'll before he continues.
Mr. Obaseki was talking at a meeting of the party when he made the declaration that he won't leave the party, and that he is the party leader. The statement that he won't tolerate opposition is a mistake. Even suspending key members is another error that is occuring under his watch.
Mr. Dan Orbih, the national vice chairman of the PDP in south-south has been suspended. He was put under suspension along with some other party leaders from Edo North senatorial district. Mr. Obaseki might be referring to them as the opposition within the party.
Recall that Tony Aziegbemi was also suspended in June. He was the chairman of the PDP in Edo State. Note that all these people were on ground when Obaseki was being reelected for another term in office. The key members of the party worked hard to ensure that the PDP and Obaseki emerge again.
Mr. Obaseki may not know that there would always be factions in the party. It is normal for a party to have divergent views and members. But suspending them would amount to mistake. Mr. Obaseki is the leader of the PDP in Edo State and he must be aware of the suspension of rhe key members.
If it is true that Obaseki is the leader, he must know what happens in the party. And he must know that Dan Orbih, Tony Aziegbemi and other top members were suspended for anti party activities.
Mr. Obaseki may continue to divide the party. Recall that some politicians followed Obaseki into the PDP from the APC. There is a need for integration that won't affect the old members. This is what Mr. Obaseki should do. The suspended members may decide to leave the PDP. An example is Mr. Peter Nwaoboshi, who left the PDP few days after he was suspended from Delta State PDP.
