Why Saraki May Not Contest 2023 Presidential Election

The choice of former President of Senate, Iyorchia Ayu, to become the next national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), at the forthcoming National Convention may have threatened the chances of former Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki, if he decides to join the contest for the presidential ticket of the opposition party in 2023.

The Vanguard had, earlier, claimed that a source revealed to them that Bukola Saraki will be contesting the presidential ticket of Peoples Democratic Party, come 2023.

It could be recalled that some leaders and members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have agreed to conduct her National Convention on Friday, October 30 and Saturday, October 31, 2021.

To ensure a hitch-free post-convention era, some leaders and members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party have, unanimously, approved the recommendation of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi-led Zoning Committee.

Remarkably, the Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi-led Zoning Committee had, earlier, recommended that the positions of the National Working Committee (NWC) that are, currently, being held by northern members of the party should be swapped with the positions being held be the Southern members.

Considerably, going by the recommendation of the Zoning Committee as approved by the National Executive Committee (NEC), the national chairmanship position of the party is zoned to the North.

Interestingly, Iyorchia Ayu, who was earlier endorsed as the consensus national chairmanship candidate of Peoples Democratic Party by some leaders of the party from North Central geopolitical zone, was reported by major media houses in Nigeria, including the PUNCH, to have been, generally, endorsed by the northern members of the party as the consensus national chairman of the opposition party.

Noticeably, by principle, if the National Chairman of a prominent political party like the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), emerges from a particular geopolitical zone, the presidential aspirant of the same party may not emerge from the geopolitical zone.

It is prominent to remember that Iyorchia Ayu hails from Gboko, Benue State which falls in the same geopolitical zone as that of former President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, who hails from Ilorin, Kwara State.

In the light of the above principle, the endorsement of Iyorchia Ayu as the consensus national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may, surely, have threatened the chances of former President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, to emerge as the presidential candidate of the party, if he joins the race to pick the presidential ticket of the party in 2023.
