Many Factions Lose Out As APC Takes Decision To Recognize Those That Won At State Congresses

One of the major problems facing the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, has been the issue of having parallel congresses.

This problem reared its ugly head during the ward congresses. It happened again during the Local Government congresses. Eventually, it still played out during the just concluded state congresses of the APC. To this end, it means that different factions of the APC conducted parallel (different) congresses in many states such as Ogun State, Lagos State, Kwara State among others.

How this happened was that some top politicians such as Ministers, influential Senators, formers Governors and others who think they wield great influence decided to exercise such influence. Many of them are struggling with their State Governors on who controls the party structures in their states ahead of 2023 general elections. In view of this, parallel congresses held leading to the emergence of winners from both factions.

In Ogun State, it was between the factions of Governor Dapo Abiodun and that of Senator Ibikunle Amosun. In Osun, it was between the factions of Governor Gboyega Oyetola and that of the Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola. In Kwara State, it was between Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq and the Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed. In all these, APC backed the factions of the Governors according to a report by The Punch.

APC takes final decision on the matter

As a way to deal with this issue, the National leadership of the APC has decided to recognize only the congresses supervised by its committee. The Secretary of the APC Caretaker Committee, Senator John Akpanudoedohe made this decision known to the public in a statement. He added that all other congresses conducted which were not supervised by its committee were just mere ''naming ceremonies'' and the party will not recognize winners that emerged from such exercises. He also advised those who feel aggrieved to channels their complaints to the party's appeals committees in their various states.

From the above decision, it is obvious that APC as a party wants to stop the bad practice of different factions going on to conduct parallel congresses. In fact, the decision will go a long way in sending a strong message that the party does not encourage rival factions. It will as well make members of the party in various states to know which faction of the party to stick with since the APC has officially made known the ones that has its support. Recognizing the faction whose congress were supervised by the committee is a way of telling party members that it knows what it is doing.

Those top politicians, Ministers, Senators, formers Governors that struggle to control the soul of the party in their various states will also learn their lessons based on this decision taken by the APC national leadership. Except if their factions are the authentic ones supervised by the committee, they may need to align with the mainstream party in their states to put an end to the needless parallel congresses in various states.
