Another Zone Endorses Consensus Candidate For Key Post In PDP After North Produced Ayu For Chairman

Indications have shown that the opposition Peoples Democratic Parry, PDP, is intentionally using consensus strategy to choose its national leaders ahead of the national convention.

Consensus arrangement is a mature and peaceful way of choosing leaders where the people agree to endorse an aspirant as the sole candidate for a position. In that case, there may not be any need for any contentious election for the posts concerned. Instead, the consensus candidates that emerged as endorsed by the people will only be confirmed as the rightful winners of the positions at the party's national convention.

This is what is playing out in the PDP ahead of its national convention in October this year. So far, two zones have endorsed consensus candidates for key offices in the PDP. The first one was for the post of PDP National Chairman. The post was zoned to the North. After vital meetings of major PDP stakeholders in the North, they agreed to cede the post to North Central. Again, they agreed to endorse former Senate President, Iyorchia Ayu, as the Northern consensus candidate for the post of PDP National Chairman.

Apart from Ayu from the North, another zone has endorsed a consensus candidate for another key post in PDP. The zone is South East. PDP had zoned the post of National Secretary to the South East. According to a report by the Punch, PDP leaders in the South East have endorsed Senator Sam Anyanwu as the consensus candidate for the position. Since there are no oppositions to Ayu and Anyanwu's candidacy after they were endorsed as consensus candidates for the posts, it means that the two of them may actually go ahead to emerge the PDP National Chairman and National Secretary through consensus arrangement.

This means that PDP is now playing a very mature, peaceful and less rancorous politics. Using consensus strategy will save PDP the time, energy and the stress of going through a highly contentious national convention. They would also be free from the crisis that would have resulted from disagreements from opposing aspirants. All these also lead to lingering legal tussles which drag a party backwards and affect its chances in elections.

Who knows what may happen next? Other zones may still use consensus to produce their candidates for other posts since the North and South East have led the way by using consensus strategy to produce candidates for the two major posts that should have been contentious.
