The Northern States Governors’ Forum at an emergency meeting on Monday in Kaduna State said the candidate with majority votes would become Nigeria’s President in the 2023 elections.

The 19 Northern governors also condemned the insistence of their 17 Southern colleagues that a Southern President should succeed the incumbent, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), after his eight-year regime in May 2023.

The northern governors made their position known in a statement issued at the end of the meeting and signed by the chairman of the Forum, Simon Lalong, who is also the Governor of Plateau State.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says the All Progressives Congress (APC) won’t be allowed to stay in power beyond May 2023.

The opposition party was reacting to a recent comment by Ali Modu Sheriff, a former governor of Borno state.

While speaking with journalists in Abuja over the weekend, Sheriff shared his intentions for the ruling party if he emerges national chairman, adding that he wants the “APC to be in government in the next 30 to 40 years”.

The Northern Governors Forum (NGF) says the collection of value-added tax (VAT) by states will cause an increase in prices of goods and services as well as create interstate trade barriers.

The NGF made the resolution at a meeting with northern state emirs and chiefs in Kaduna on Monday.

The legal battle on the collection of VAT by either states or the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has been an ongoing issue since August 2021.

Akeredolu carpets northern governors over stance on rotational presidency

The Chairman of the Southern Governors’ Forum and Governor of Ondo State, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, on Monday, disclosed that the Northern Governors’ Forum was merely exercising its rights to freedom of expression over its stance on 2023 presidency.

Akeredolu, emphasised that the resolution reached by the northern governors who unanimously condemned the statement by the Southern Governors Forum that the Presidency must go to the South should be termed as a means of expressing themselves.

Senator representing Kaduna South Senatorial district, Danjuma La’ah has disclosed reasons he wept on different occasions on the floor of red chambers while presenting motions on banditry attacks in his constituency.

The lawmaker said, banditry activities in Southern Kaduna in the thinking of some Senators looked like a Southern Kaduna issue alone, saying at that point, if he opens up on what he knows about banditry, heads will roll.

Speaking on the development in his senatorial district, the lawmaker recalled how he told senators that one day, all the 109 Senators will encounter insecurity, in form of bandits, kidnapping insurgency and other forms of criminality, stressing that his words have come to pass.
