Amotekun (Leopard) is a security outfit established by southwest geographical zone on 9 January 2020 by the six state governors of all the South Western states of Nigeria.
This states include, Lagos State, Oyo State, Ogun State , Ondo State , Osun State and Ekiti State. The establishment was subject to the resolution made in Ibadan, Ọ̀yọ́ State capital in the regional security summit held by all the six state governors in June 2919 through Development Agenda for Western Nigeria Commission (DAWNC).
Though, its establishment witnessed lots of controversy but now that it's finally a success the region could mobilise resources to take care of the people and the youth could organise themselves to engage in meaningful competition towards the protection of the zone.
Other regions, especially the northern parts of the country believe that there are ulterior motive behind its establishment but It was solely established order to curb the menaces and other forms of criminality and violencehappening in the southwest states and their actions and activities have been yielding positive results especially in combating excessiveness and illegal activities of the herdsmen.
Some of the achievements recorded so far included the arrest of about 42 cows for destroying farmlands in Alagbaka area of Akure, Ondo state capital.
Also, the blockading of some Northern youths to sneak into the state in the early pandemic period is also a laudable part of their achievements. The youths who were armed with different weaponry claimed they were coming from Nassarawa and Zamfara states when they were intercepted.
The men of Amotekun also raided four illegal mining sites in Atakumosa Lest local Government Area of Osun State and arrested about 10 Chinese and one Ghanaian.
In addition, Ekiti state command of the security operation also arrested three robbers in Isinbode Ekiti Ekiti state.
Cultural observances play a vital role in any society and I believe this is what amotekun is holding in a very high esteem. Amotekun despite the obsolete weapons in their possession, they are still doing well. I believe they will do well especially when they get more sophisticated weapons and not the obsolete ones they are presently using.
