Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom has written to President Muhammadu Buhari saying Nigeria is on the verge of a civil war if herdsmen atrocious activities are not addressed now.

Governor Ortom stated that leaders of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore and Fulani Nationality Movement, FUNAM, who have claimed responsibility of attacks by Fulani herdsmen must be arrested and prosecuted in the spirit of justice.

In the letter titled: Appeal to Act Before Herdsmen Drag Nigeria Into a Civil War, the Governor called on President Buhari to ban open grazing across the country to end Fulani herdsmen attacks on innocent Nigerians and farmer to avert a possible civil war.

Governor Ortom said the policies of open visa policy, non-compliance with protocols of ECOWAS on transhumance, perceived silence of federal government on Fulani atrocities, but switf condemnation of any perceived or real threats on Fulani and the failure to arrest, disarm and prosecute Fulani militia and armed herdsmen are among the many reasons the attacks by herdsmen have continued.

In an eighteen paragraphs letter, Governor Ortom made recommendations as solutions to insecurity in the country.

He said a National Ranching Policy be developed by federal government in line with global best practices of animal husbandry, while the president should direct Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to enforce open grazing Prohibition law passed by various states.
