As part of measures to get youths gainfully employed, President Mohammadu Buhari, yesterday launched the Presidential Youth Empowerment Scheme in the State House.
The president believes that with the launching of the scheme, youths across the 774 local government councils will get the necessary take-off assets to kickstart a journey of Wealth and self sufficiency.
During the launching, the president handed out some very well decorated tricycles, popularly known as Keke and motorcycles, also known as Okada to some beneficiaries of the scheme.
While the president applauded the scheme as one that can immediately meet the yearnings of Nigeria youths and take them away from the life of crimes at a time the nation is going through a tough and unstable economy, many Nigerians are however not impressed with the scheme. At a time the world is embracing technology and digital economy, President Buhari is taking Nigeria and Nigerians back to obsolete era.
Many Nigerians are of the opinion that President would have been applauded if the scheme was meant to provide digital tools, such as laptops, cameras, etc, trainings as well as funding to support new, emerging and existing small businesses.
Taking a look at the array of guests and personalities that were present at a ceremony that was organized only for the sole purpose of giving out Keke Maruwa and Okadas, then one cannot but weep over the quality of leaders we have.
In July 23, 2020, the president approved the whooping sum of #75 billion to drive youth entrepreneurs in the country. This was seen by many as a great step towards gradual and total emancipation of our youths who have proven over the years to be outstanding in music, science, technology, agriculture, entertainment, photography, blogging and many more.
The president has demonstrated yesterday during the launch of the P-YES scheme that he has completely lost touch with the youths and even more worrisome is his inability to reconnect with them even at a the youths are on the streets protesting police brutality as every efforts they make to genuinely make a living as a digital youth are always mistaken by the police as a life of crime and criminality.
