Allegations: Magu set for defence, promises to cooperate with Salami panel.
Ahead of the opening of his defence on Monday, the suspended Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ibrahim Magu, promised on Friday to cooperate with the Justice Ayo Salami Presidential Investigation Committee.
But he asked for what he called fair- minded probe proceedings against him and
said he was not contemplating any legal proceedings against President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration that has given him an opportunity to serve the country.
Magu made his position known in a statement in Abuja through his counsel, Mr. Wahab Shittu
The statement: “Our client appreciates the panel for ordering his release from custody even if the panel indicated it never ordered his detention at any time in the first place.
“Our client appreciates the efforts of the Buhari Administration in its commitment to the war against corruption including the ongoing probe being undertaken by the Hon justice Salami investigation panel.
“Our client undertakes to cooperate fully with the Salami panel by making available to the panel formal response to the allegations against him in the social media platforms and newspapers since he has not been formally served with copies of the allegations against him by the panel.”
But Magu, who asked Nigerians not to prejudge him, demanded a fair-minded probe by Salami committee.
The statement added: “Our client strongly appeals for a fair- minded probe proceedings against him including an open mind by the Nigerian people until the probe process is completed.
Factory worker kills mate over N13m, steals N2.2m from account.
Wisdom Nwachukwu and Moses Moses were not only colleagues at a bottle water factory in Auchi, Edo State, they were close friends before money severed their ties. It was Moses who allegedly pulled a fast one on Nwachukwu and cruelly ended the relationship over N13m.
City Round learnt that Nwachukwu showed Moses a credit alert of N13m that his brother based in South Africa sent to him to execute a building project at their hometown in Imo State on his behalf.
While they were both on a night shift, Moses reportedly lured Nwachukwu to a deserted location around the company knifed him to death and fled with his phone and Automated Teller Machine card.
He was said to have taken the phone and the ATM card to some Internet fraudsters in Auchi who helped him to withdraw N2.2m from Nwachukwu’s account.
Our correspondent gathered that Nwachukwu’s family became worried when they did not see him or reach him on the phone.
A case of missing person was consequently reported to the police and a petition was addressed to the Inspector-General of Police, Adamu Mohammed, who directed Intelligence Response Team to investigate the incident.
The IRT operatives were said to have tracked some POS transactions Moses carried out with Nwachukwu’s ATM card to Benin City, Ore and Auchi areas of Edo State and arrested him in a hotel where he was hiding.
Ondo APC, PDP: Gripped by primary fever.
The Ondo State chapters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have been thrown into governorship primary fever. The stiff competition in the two parties have also compounded long standing intra-party and inter-party conflicts.
The only cure to to the apprehension is credible shadow poll. There appears to be a proper diagnosis. But, will the appropriate medication come? Who will administer it? Will the PDP Governorship Primary Committee conduct a free and fair intra-party poll? Will the APC Primary Panel be above board? Will the outcome be acceptable to the antagonistic aspirants? Or will the exercise herald post-primary crises in the ruling and opposition parties?
Both parties are bracing up for next week. The APC is maintaining a keen interest in the PDP’s affair for obvious reasons and vice versa. The nature of the candidate that will be thrown up by the APC will influence the PDP’s calculations, ahead of its primary and shape its preparations for the governorship election.
On Monday, delegates will storm Akure for the APC primary. On Wednesday, it will be PDP’s turn. Will the contests be significantly different? As usual, there will be dollar war because of the mode of primary. The indirect option is never insulated from monetisation.
No fewer than eight contenders are competing for the governorship ticket of the tension-soaked Ondo PDP chapter. They are Deputy Governor Agboola Ajayi, Bode Ayorinde, Sola Ebiseni, Eyitayo Jegede (SAN), Senator Boluwaji Kunlere, Banji Okunomo, Dr. Eddy Olafeso, and Gooday Erewa.
