The spokesperson for Bola Tinubu, Bayo Onanuga, cautioned Igbo in Lagos on Saturday night to refrain from "interfering" in state politics. Let 2023 be the last time Igbos interfere with Lagos politics, he said. 2027 shouldn't see another occurrence. Lagos is comparable to Anambra, Imo, or any other Nigerian state. It is neither No Man's Land nor the Federal Capital Territory. Yoruba people live there. Do not speak out.
The alert was distributed via a tweet from Onanuga's official Twitter account, @aonanuga1956, who is the director of media and publicity for the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council. Former governor of Ogun State Olusegun Osoba had already pleaded with those of "Igbo extract" in Lagos not to make the election a tribal issue.
The racist comments made against locals had exacerbated the tribal trend on social media. The Labour Party's nominee for governor in Lagos, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, as well as the state's current governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, have both become involved in the web of anti-ethnic prejudice.
