How PDP Chairmanship May Divide Top Northern Politicians

The forthcoming national convention of the People's Democratic Party may seriously divide the northern region and politicians into two or more factions. The party would soon hold its convention and a new chairman would emerge to lead the party to 2023 poll.

Already, the National Executive Council has agreed that the next chairman would come from northern region and that has been sealed. But there would be so many interested politicians.

According to the Punch Newspaper, there would be three main contestants for the job. And each of them would come from the three subregions in north. The wider northern region has three geopolitical zones (north center, northwest and northeast). Hence, the race would be keenly among the three subregions.

Meanwhile, the north centre may favour Mr. David Mark. The reason being that only Benue State is under the control of the PDP in the whole of north centre. The north central zone may agree to field the former president of the House of Senate. There would be other contestants, but he stands a better chance considering the report of the Punch Newspaper.

Likewise, the northwest zone would rely on its numerical strength. The zone has the highest number of states (seven) and biggest states (Kano and Katsina) are in the zone. It is believed that the zone may drop the name of former Kaduna State governor Mr Ahmed Makarfi. The same thing may happen in northeastern zone.

But the region would be more divided into factions and interest groups based on the ambition of some top politicians in the northern region. The NEC had thrown the race for the PDP ticket open and northern politicians would be able to contest again. Then, there would be a bit of clash of interests again.

Take for instance, Mr. Bukola Saraki must calculate that if the national chairman emerges from north center, it would not be easy for him to get the ticket of the party because the north central zone can't have both the PDP chairmanship and the presidential ticket. Hence, he would like the PDP chairman to come from another zone.

Likewise, if Mr. Aminu Tambuwal still nurtures his political ambition, he wouldn't want the national chairman to come from northwest on the ground that his own ambition may be affected. Hence, he would want the national chairman to come from north center or northwest.

Lastly, the former vice president talked about zoning at the time the NEC was meeting. It could be inferred that he still believes he can rule the country. And his permutation must be that the chairman of the party mustn't come from northeastern zone. That means he will want to push the chairmanship to north center or northwest.
