In an interview with Hindi Livinus, former Secretary to the Government (SGF) of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, discussed how Muhammadu Buhari was given a change of image, which further influenced people's negative perception of him before the 2015 elections.
According to the former SGF, it was Bola Ahmed Tinubu the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who brought in consultants from the United States of America to help influence the negative perceptions people had of the then APC Presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari.
The consultants he said, helped former United States of America's President, Barack Obama to successfully execute his campaign.
According to him, the consultants started from the scratch in their research work which revealed Buhari's weaknesses and provided them with the messages needed to change the long held perception. This was done with the use of billboards and other campaign methods.
He further pointed out that it was at this point that the president began to dress in attires of different Nigerian tribes and wearing suit.
He added that this influenced the then Presidential candidate, Buhari's image as a family man with his beautiful daughters. Showing a humane loving and trustworthy image of the president during the election.
According to Babachir Lawal, during one of the strategy sessions held with the consultants, they suggested, "why don’t you allow Buhari’s wife to come out so that she can be contrasted with Dame Patience Jonathan? When you do that, you would have won the election already, they said. She provided a contrast to the former First Lady.”
Babachir who declared himself as a Tinubu man during the interview gave the former Lagos State governor praised for his efforts and Financial backing to the success of the Political party.
