It is located in Southern Mozambique.
Facts about the Maputo-Katembe Bridge;
i. The bridge was constructed by a Chinese company called China Road and Bridge Corporation.
The bridge was commissioned by a Mozambique development company called Maputo Sul.
ii. Construction of the bridge started in 2014 and the bridge was formerly opened for transportation on 10 November, 2018.
iii. The construction of the bridge created jobs for 2000 persons.
iv. The bridge cost Mozambique the sum of $726 Million and 85% of the money was financed by loans from a Chinese bank called the Chinese Exim Bank with an interest rate of 4% in 20 years.
v. The length of the bridge is 3.042km making it the longest suspension bridge in Africa overtaking Matadi Bridge which is 0.722 km long.
vi. The construction of the bridge led to the displacement of 920 families which their resettlement started in 2015.
vii. The bridge was criticize for being too expensive considering the amount of making similar bridge in China and the interest rate on the Chinese Exim Bank loan is said to be high.
viii. The bridge was awarded the Award of Merit of the Engineering News-Record (ENR) in New York. It was also awarded the FULTON award for 2015 and 2019.
The construction of the Maputo-Katembe Bridge should be credited and it also indicates the rapid infrastructural development in the Continent.
