Trump as a man had a following that tetters towards the extreme and at the same time an opposition that isn't friendly in any way. There are almost no middle grounders when it comes to Donald Trump. You either love him or You hate him.
Many opposed his leadership so much not necessarily because of his personality, but basically on his policies. His major policy thrust as the president of the United states was a unilateral approach to world politics as against a multilateral disposition of world leaders and former US Presidents.
He preached the message of America first. A message that never resonated well amongst politicians round world who believe in the vision of a global interwoven world. A world driven by an agenda of globalisation and not isolationism.
Trump on his part refuted the accusation of isolationism pegged on him, and always argued that America under him was never going to abdicate from its responsibility of leading the free world. Rather he always argued that America had to get her internal affairs right before settling that of others.
This very ideological policy was taken to another level by Trump himself when he pulled America away from the Paris Accord arguing that America spent a lot of money on international organisations that yielded nothing to her.
He initiated a trade war with China because of the tarrifs he placed on some China goods being imported into America. He argued that these tarrifs would help American businesses back home.
He presented a front to his followers as the outsider that muscled his way into power against the wish of the political establishment. He drove this message home with his "drain the swamp" cliche.
The masses saw him as the one that truly meant his words and not a conventional politician. His unrefined way of delivery was another tool in his armoury that shot him into the spot light of relevance. The people saw him as the one that understands the common man.
Trump had a strong base that reflected in his political rallies. His outings drew unprecedented crowds. A gathering of people that hold unto his words as the words of an infallible man-- that was the influence Trump had on the people.
The birth of Trumpism --- an unflinching and unwavering loyalty to Trump and his movement . The trust in a man by a motley of crowds in their millions who passionately believe the former president every step of the way. The MAGA faithful who will stop at nothing in defending the former president.
The aftermath of the January 6th "insurrection" and the eventual surrender of power by Trump had signalled an end to the movement known as Trumpism. So it seemed the force at which the message of this movement had operated with in the past had waned with Trump out of office. That verve and energy all seemingly gone.
While many had thought so , a resurgence of Trumpism greeted the world once again. Trump haven positioned himself as the leader of the republican party and the confirmation of this fact by his avowed opposition in the party such as Mitt Romney and Mitch McConnell speaks to the power of Trumpism.
The statements by Mith and Mitch affirming the popularity of Trump in the party and the testament that he will win the Gop nomination if he contests in 2024 has once again given life to the Trump world.
Trump's appearance at the CPAC in Florida 28th February and his statements that day proves the fact that he is not yet done with politics and isn't going away anytime soon.
This is why I believe that the Unbelievable come of Trumpism is a phenomenal worthy of study.
