There are four strategic states that the opposition party should try to capture before the commencement of the incoming presidential election in the year 2023. The members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) should find a way to take control of these states in order to have higher chances of winning in the year twenty twenty-three general election. Although the strength of the ruling party has grown more than all the political parties in the country, there are still some states that the opposition party can still take over.

1. Osun State

The turnouts of events that occurred in the last Osun State gubernatorial election showed that there is still a chance for the opposition party to take over in the state. The leaders of the party in Osun State have established tried to reclaim the lost mantle of leadership in Osun State in the year 2018 gubernatorial election of the state, but the results of the election favoured the All Progressive Congress (APC) eventually.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was leading in the early results of the election as announced by the electoral commission. People of the opposition party have already started jubilating, but there was misconduct in some strategic voting places in Osun State. There was a rerun election where Governor Gboyega Oyetola was declared the winner of the election. It was a narrow win for the ruling party then in the last Osun State gubernatorial election. If the opposition party should channel the same energy towards the incoming election, the opposition party can take over the state.

2. Oyo State

Oyo State is the only state that is under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the southwestern part of the country. Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State is currently doing well and people are appreciating his government. However, the opposition party should not relent on this because the leaders of the All Progressive Congress (APC) will want to capture all the states in the southwestern part of the country. The leaders of the opposition party should look for a way to win the next Oyo State gubernatorial election.

3. Anambra State

The next Anambra State gubernatorial election will determine how far the ruling party has gone politically in Nigeria. Anambra State is the only state in Nigeria that is under the control of a neutral political party other than the two prominent political parties in Nigeria. The state is under the control of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) at the state level. The ruling party will want to extend its popularity to the southeastern part of the country.

The members of the opposition party should make sure that the ruling party does not capture Anambra State in the next gubernatorial election in the state. The leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state should make it their priority.

4. Ekiti State

The leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) can also target Ekiti State alongside other states that have been discussed above. Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State is interested in becoming the next flag bearer of the All Progressive Congress (APC) and he is not going to secure the ticket apparently because of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu's factor. Kayode Fayemi will not want to work for the party in the next election if he does not secure the party's ticket. The opposition party can make use of this opportunity to capture the state.
