2023: Why Kwankwaso Might Take Over Kano State If Ganduje & Shekarau Don’t Reconcile

As 2023 draws to a close, politicians prepare for next year's presidential election. Kano State in northern Nigeria is among the states awaiting 2023 due to the gubernatorial election that will be held in the state.

At the same time, Kano politics was hot again due to a political rift that occurred between the state governor, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, and his counterpart, former Kano governor, current Kano Central senator, Dr Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau. As a result of the administrators' crisis, the All Progressives Congress (APC), led by former governors in the state, has split into two factions, and each of them took its faction.

As a result, the political landscape of the APC in Kano State has changed and in my viewpoint, the crisis has become an opportunity for Kwankwaso to take over the leadership of the state as long as Ganduje and Shekarau do not resolve their conflicts.

In 2015, Kwankwaso and Ganduje became friends because their views on the APC were united but later, a political crisis erupted between the leaders which led to their split, and Kwankwaso joined the opposition People's Democratic Party (PDP). As a result, Kwankwaso took the initiative to field a PDP candidate for governor in order to take over power from Ganduje.

Hence, in the 2019 general election, Kwankwaso fielded Abba Kabir Yusuf (Abba Gida-Gida) as the governorship candidate in the state but lost to Ganduje due to the appearance of "Inconclusive" in the aftermath of the election, and later the court declared Ganduje as elected governor.

According to the research, Governor Ganduje has been successful because he has had support from the current Kano Central senator. Shekarau has become a popular figure in the state because of the number of positions he holds. As a result, the candidate nominated by Kwankwaso failed due to the strength of Ganduje and Shekarau.

So, I think Kwankwaso can win in 2023 because the strength that Ganduje relies on will diminish, which will not give him the confidence to win over Kwankwaso.
