With just a few days until the gubernatorial election, citizens are eagerly waiting with their voter cards to elect the candidates of their choice. In Kaduna, many citizens, especially those from the predominantly Christian southern Kaduna, want to put an end to the Muslim-Muslim ticket. It should be noted that since 1999, Kaduna has always been ruled by a Muslim governor and Christian deputy, or vice versa, until 2019 when Gov. Nasir El-Rufai changed the modus operandi. His anointed successor, Sen. Uba Sani, who is contesting on Saturday, also followed the path of El-Rufai by fielding a Muslim running mate, who is the incumbent deputy governor and also a native of Southern Kaduna.
Sir Kashim Ibrahim House (Kaduna Government House).
From the results of the just concluded presidential election, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won the state, polling 554,360 votes to beat Bola Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), who got 399,293 votes, and the Labour Party’s Peter Obi, who polled 294,494 votes. Should the gubernatorial election go this way, Ashiru Kurdan of the PDP, who is fielding a Southern Kaduna Christian as his running mate, may be victorious, which would bring an end to the Muslim-Muslim ticket in the state.
However, Jonathan Asake of the Labour Party, who is a Christian from Southern Kaduna, wouldn't be a pushover, as the presidential election results from the state show that his party has lots of supporters. Recall that his party won two House of Representatives seats in the state.
Many Southern Kaduna people who voted for the PDP in the presidential election might switch to Asake of the LP, who is their kinsman, thereby reducing votes meant for the PDP. It should be noted that, besides Patrick Yokowa, the Southern Kaduna people haven't had their kinsman as governor of the state, and many of them feel this is their chance.
Asake has a chance in the forthcoming gubernatorial election since he would be contesting against three strong Muslim candidates: Uba Sani of the APC, Ashiru Kudan of the PDP, and Hunkuyi of the NNPP. Nevertheless, Southern Kaduna is known to be a PDP region, and the votes would be shared between the PDP and LP in the region, thereby jeopardizing the chances of voting in PDP and bringing an end to the Muslim-Muslim ticket of the APC in the state.
