Opinion: Why Zoning the Presidency Won't be a Bad Idea

2023 is drawing near, and it will be an election year. Tensions are already rising, as can be seen from the different meetings that have been held by the different governors' forums in the state.

The Southern Governors' Forum has already concluded that the next president has to come from the South. The North are insisting that the president must come from the North since they have the numbers to back it up. The Ohanaeze Ndigbo is also agitating that the East produce the next president.

Going by this (excluding the agitation by IPOB and Oduduwa agitators), we can see there is already tension waiting to burst forth. If all parties are to insist on their stands, this means Nigeria will be on the brink of a national crisis that may not end well.

We all know Nigeria is a complex country. It houses people from different religions, cultures, and traditions. To ensure that everyone is well represented in the country, the Federal Character Clause was enacted. It is given below:

The Federal Character clause in Section 14 (3) of the Constitution states as follows: "The composition of the Government of the Federation, or any of its agencies, and the conduct of its affairs, shall be carried out in such a manner as to reflect the federal character of Nigeria and the need to promote national unity, and also to command national loyalty, thereby ensuring that there shall be no predominance of persons from a few states, or from a few ethnic or other sectional groups in that government or in any of its agencies." (source: ICIR).

Going back to the discussion, the idea of zoning the Presidency won't be a bad idea. It is constitutional if it is done going by the federal character clause.

Zoning the Presidency will eliminate many problems that we are currently facing in the country.

Zoning will ensure that each geopolitical zone-South-South, South-East, South-West, North-East, North-West, and North-Central are represented. If a candidate from a particular zone finishes its total possible terms, then the next president should come from another opposite zone. For example, if the current president is from the South-South, the next president should come from the North West, next from the South West, next from the North East, next south East, and finally North Central.

In this case, everyone is well represented. There will be no accusations that some people are marginalised.

Zoning will also help in the development of the country. When a Southerner is in power, much of his development plan goes to the South. When another zone takes over, much development goes to that zone, and in 24 years, each zone has undergone a high amount of development.

Zoning will also result in the peace and stability of the country. If each zone has the opportunity to be the president, then the different zones can wait for their turn peacefully, but it should be noted that other zones should not be totally overlooked when carrying out appointments or developments by virtue of the Federal Character Clause.

I strongly believe that the presidency should be zoned.
