The southwest region would produce the national vice chairman of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and the region is free to use whatever pattern or method it deems fit for the purpose of the election. But the consensus approach can only divide the southwest zone of the party into fragments.
The consensus method is apparently going to be used in the northern region. Mr. Iyorchia Ayu, a politician from Benue State, could become the chairman of the party anytime soon as the northern region leaders have talked about the matter. But the southwest region can't use the same approach. It would not only fail, but also divide the party in the region.
Already, the southwest region of the party has not totally recovered from the congress conducted earlier this year to choose the leader of the party at the regional level. The congress, which was held in Osogbo, was between Mr. Taofeek Arapaja and Eddy Olafeso. It was a serious political battle that almost tore the southwest PDP into shreds.
The power tussle between Mr. Ayodele Fayose and the Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde reached the climax at that time. Each of them wanted to dominate the party at the regional level. And there may be no specific way to unite the two men as far as the issue of vice chairman of the PDP is concerned.
It has been reported that the seat has been zoned to Osun State. Even the PDP is not totally united in the state. There have been issue of leadership and power tussle between loyalists of Akin Ogunbiyi and the last PDP candidate in Osun State, Mr. Ademola Adeleke.
Now, since there are factions in the southwest PDP, which of the two or more sides would legally nominate a politician who will become the vice Chairman of the party at the national level? Of course, Mr. Taofeek Arapaja is the head at the southwest region, but would other factions agree with him?
The consensus method is good. It saves time and energy. But as far as the southwest region is concerned, it would be better to allow any interested person or faction try their luck. There would be a serious disagreement among the party leaders in the region and division would arise from the exercise.
The Nigerian Tribune initially reported that a former governor, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, has been adopted as the deputy national chairman of the party. But not long after that, the Punch Newspaper also came up with a piece of news. It says that Mr. Wale Oladipo has been chosen for the job.
