The Northern PDP political leaders which consist of governors and executives are skimming daily to get the party’s Presidential ticket. They want the presidential ticket, and at the same time the party’s Chairman. It was announced at the conclusion of the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on Thursday that all the party’s positions held by the Southerners should be exchanged with that of the Northerners, and then declared open the party’s presidential ticket.
However, according to Punch, the former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, some governors of the Peoples Democratic Party, and other stakeholders are meeting at the Bauchi Governor's Lodge in Abuja. The meeting might be about who will become the presidential candidate under the banner of the party in the upcoming general elections in 2023. By the way, Atiku spoke at the NEC on Thursday, he said it does not matter where the President of Nigeria hails from, which is an indication that the Northern PDP members are prepared to outsmart their Southern counterparts.

Therefore, the Southerners can also play their own game in the party, if they are interested in ruling Nigeria in 2023. Analysis has shown that in the PDP, there are 8 Southern Governors and 6 Northern Governors. Since politics is by number, the Southern Governors can insist on zoning and support a Southerner as the party’s presidential candidate. Another game they can play is by supporting a popular Southerner that they know has the necessary criteria and integrity to become the President of Nigeria, a candidate that can get votes from all parts of Nigeria.
The Southern Governors should be united on the candidate they are presenting. By playing this game, even the Northerners will take them seriously and support them to get the presidential ticket in 2023. The game of politics is also by number, the Southerners need to start negotiating with their Northern counterparts to get to the presidency in 2023.
