Mr. Peter Obi, a former Anambra State governor, was the PDP vice presidential candidate in the 2019 presidential election. He ran along with Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. However, as the 2023 general elections are much closer, Mr. Obi needs to take some political steps.
The leadership of the PDP had thrown the race for the party's ticket open for all interested contenders. The party wouldn't zone the ticket, which used to be a normal practice. Then, Mr. Peter Obi has rights to jostle for the ticket of the party perhaps to be the first Igbo politician to fly the PDP flag (for the presidential election).
The first step he needs to take is to have a visit to the core Igbo leaders to check their specific opinions or readiness for the 2023 race. Actually, Igbo people have been constantly asking for the presidency. Mr. Peter Obi should have individual meeting with the key leaders.
The political party still has top politicians in the southeastern region. Mr. Ike Ekweremadu, Mr. Abaribe, Enugu State governor among others are top leaders that the former Anambra State governor can meet for a dialogue about Igbo presidency.
After that, Mr. Obi should meet the former vice president. It is necessary for him to include Alhaji Atiku Abubakar in whatever steps he wants to take. Of course, they both represented the PDP in 2019. And one particular thing can be the topic of their meeting.
It may be difficult for Mr. Peter Obi to work against Atiku. He may not be able to defeat the former vice president in the PDP primary election. Atiku has already indicated his own interest in the party's ticket. Obi can ask him if the two of them can use a joint ticket as it happened in 2019. If the former vice president agrees, Obi may not have to take further steps. However, if Atiku doesn't give his consent, there would be more work to do.
The last important step that he may need to take is to have meetings with very powerful leaders who have led the country or the PDP. He should try to get audience of former presidents Goodluck Jonathan and Olusegun Obasanjo. His main message to them should be that they should consider working for an Igbo politician for the PDP ticket.
Once he is done with the steps, he can conclude on the chances he has if he contests for the presidential or vice presidential slot of the PDP. The steps can even open the political door for him ahead of the polls.
