The powerful National Executive Council of the People's Democratic Party met yesterday to discuss how the party would handle its national convention and issue of party ticket which has dominated major political debates in the country. Three politicians may have to start preparation for the national convention.
Mr. Sule Lamido, a former Jigawa governor, can start to prepare for the national convention of the party. He is seen as a tough and disciplined politician that the PDP needs at this crucial and critical time. The former governor would be a favoured candidate most especially by northerners.
His preparation should start by first declaring his interest in the job and thereafter he should visit top political leaders who are active in the PDP. He was in Ogun State sometime ago to have a meeting with former president Olusegun Obasanjo. The two of them seem to be very good friends as they go along together. Anyways, Sule Lamido can start preparing for a better task.
Secondly, former president of the upper chamber of the National Assembly (House of Senate), Mr. David Mark, also needs to get ready for the daunting challenge. His name became more popular when it was clear that the PDP would pick its national chairman from north. The party may want to opt for north centre in more specific terms. And David Mark would want to start his preparation in earnest.
He has a number of political allies. In the southeastern part of the country, Mr. David Mark can boast of Ike Ekweremadu with whom he led the upper chamber of the National Assembly. Of course, Ekweremadu is still in the Senate and he can mobilise support for his former boss.
Likewise it is important for Mr. Mark to consult the former president, Goodluck Jonathan. Jonathan's popularity skyrockets these days. There is hardly a day without a reference to him and the 2023 general elections. Hence, he should just consult the former leader and spell out his plans for the PDP with the aim of getting Jonathan's backups.
Mr. Babangida Aliyu may stun analysts by coming out to contest for the seat. Although he may have issues with some powerful chieftains or stalwarts of the party, there is no doubt that he was faithful enough to the PDP and the leaders. He may not win the seat, but he can start getting ready for the convention.
He appeared in the news some months ago when he opened up on what happened in 2015. He unequivocally said that northern governors didn't work for Jonathan in the 2015 poll. Rather than criticising him, he should be commended for revealing the truth.
Whether he would be supported by southern politicians or not, he can start preparing. And one thing is that if all northern leaders queue behind him, he would definitely become the chairman of the PDP.
