It is no longer news that the Governorship election in Ondo state, Southwest, Nigeria will hold on the 10th of October,2020 and the political gladiators in the Sunshine state are making necessary calculations and permutations so that their preferred candidate will be the Landlord at the Alagbaka Government house in Akure, the state capital.
The political game in the state is getting more interesting as bigwigs in different political platforms are coming out to vie for the governorship seat.In the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC), about 12 aspirants will be contesting the primary election tomorrow. They will be slugging it out with one another to know the flagbearer that will the party will give the go-ahead stamp.
The task of choosing the right candidate will not be an easy task for the Governor Yahaya Bello-Led electoral committee. It will be a tough contest as the incumbent Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu is also vieing for a second term in office.Others includes former Governorship aspirant and Bola Tinubu annointed candidate In 2015,Olusegun Abraham,Former Governorship candidate of Alliance for Democracy (AD)Olusola Oke.
The Odds Against Rotimi Akeredolu :
Rotimi Akeredolu who won the governorship seat in 2016 based on the massive support given to him by the party leadership and the people of Ondo state will also be trying his popularity and political sagacity cum strength tomorrow. It will not be an easy ride for him because of his dwindling popularity. The political blunders he committed over the years will be his major odd against him.
Akeredolu might not emerge victorious tomorrow because of the following reasons :
i. His alleged Anti-party affairs in 2019 polls :
The Senior Advocate of Nigeria and former President of the Nigerian Bar Association(NBA) might not have been forgiven for the role he played during the 2019 General election where he allegedly supported candidates of a rival political party allowing his party, The All Progressive Congress to lose two out of the three senatorial seats and some seat in the House of Representatives. The state also lost the presidential election to the People's Democratic Party. He may not be rewarded with a return ticket for this singular reason.
II. Recent resignation of key figures in the party :
Some members of the APC believes that Rotimi Akeredolu is not a team player and that divisiveness is a major factor that characterised his four years stay in the Number one position in the state. His one-man show and insensitivity to others political aspirations and party member's welfare caused the state deputy Governor, Mr Agboola Ajayi and the secretary to the state government.
It is instructive to note that the deputy governor left the APC with 34 top party leaders in the state. This is a big headache for the members of the APC as they are accusing Akeredolu of doing nothing to stop the bigwigs in the party from decamping.
iii. The political strength of other contestants :
The major contestants under the platform of the All Progressive Congress are influential and powerful politicians in the state and they have vowed to give Akeredolu a run for his money in the poll.
One thing is certain, tomorrow's primary of the All Progressive Congress in Ondo state will be a very interesting process with a lot of suspense and intriguing evaluations.
