Academic Qualification For Political Office Holders In Nigeria Should Be Reviewed (Opinion)

If Education is indeed, the bedrock for sustainable development, then it is necessary that those who are at the helm of affairs in Nigeria should be highly educated so as to move the nation forward. Academic qualifications should therefore be the major thing to look out for before electing anyone into political offices. This is so because those who are highly educated has more propensity to understand the workings of government and are better positioned in analyzing issues and policies. Although some will argue that there are so many professors and PhD holders working under our leaders that can equally help them when it comes to analyzing issues and policies. But the thing is that you can only do better on things you understand rather than things you were told or asked to do that you cannot even comprehend.

We are of the opinion that the academic qualification of our political office holders should be reviewed to allow for only those with PhD and Professors to be eligible for the position of the President and Governor, while that of the Senate and House of Representatives should be minimum of a Masters Degree. The academic qualification for those going for State House of Assemblies should be Masters Degree and above, while that of Local Government Chairmen and Councillors should be a minimum of B.Sc or HND.

If we are able to do this, we are of the belief that the country will be better positioned for rapid development. Our laws and polices will become more apt. Education must be the major criteria for appointing ministers and commissioners. No one with less than a PhD should be appointed into the office of a minister or commissioner. A minister or commissioner must as a matter of necessity, have a good knowledge of the ministry he or she is called to lead. It is time to put an end to the reliance on technocrats who work under these ministries. If a minister or commissioner is able to understand what the ministry is all about, he or she will be better positioned to make positive impact.
