The political feud between loyalists of former Governor of Osun State and minister of interior, Rauf Aregbesola, and the current Governor of the state, Ggboyega Oyetola has taken a new twist as loyalists of Aregbesola have dragged the leadership of the All Progressive Congress (APC) headed by Mai Mala Buni to Court.

According to the Tribune, aggrieved Aregbesola loyalists led by Yusuf Asifat Makanjuola and 2516 others accused the Congress organising committee headed by Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye of excluding them from taking part in the Ward Congress after purchasing nomination forms.

Consequently, they are asking the Federal high court in Osogbo to rule on the legality of the Congress as they dragged the leadership of the party and Hon. Elegbeleye before the court.

However, you will recall that the APC leadership had warned its members about taking the party to Court to settle disputes. The national secretary of the party, John Akpanudoedehe had warned while addressing local government appeal committees that members who take the party to court without approaching the committees would be disciplined.

So do Aregbesola's loyalists risk being expelled by the party?

In my opinion, I would say Yes and No.

Yes, because the APC has expelled members who took the party to court in the past. Recall that Hilliard Eta, a former vice chairman (South-South) was expelled for taking the party to court to challenge the dissolution of the Adams Oshiomole-led National Working Committee. Also, 41 APC members in Enugu who took the party’s chairman to court were expelled last month.

On the other hand. No, because the action seems not to be working as it has not stopped other aggrieved members of the party from seeking redress at the law court. According to the Punch, APC members in Bauchi and Ekiti who were also aggrieved about the conduct of the ward congress took the party to court last month.

But considering the fact that Osun State will be conducting another governorship election in about nine months time, the APC cannot risk internal squabbles within its ranks in Osun State. The leadership of the party should therefore make moves to bring loyalists of Aregbesola and Oyetola together otherwise the opposition will capitalize on it.
