Opinion: Magu's Suspension As EFCC Boss Is Politically Motivated, Tinubu is the Real Target

From what I have been able to see on the recent drama played on the Nigeria political space, I think Nigerians are being deceived. However, I have come to make some clarifications on the Ibrahim Magu's suspension saga.

If you are a very keen observer of the series of political rowdiness the Nigeria experienced in the past few weeks, you will come to agree with me that Ibrahim Magu's detention and sack as acting chairman of the Economic Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC is politically motivated and the real target is Chief Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a national leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Let me take you back to the 2015 when the merger party, APC was formed primarily from the Tinubu's ACN and Buhari's CPC. Both Tinubu and Buhari wanted to be president of Nigeria, however, they reasoned together and formed a united party in order to defeat the incumbent president Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. After forming the APC, the question on who the flag bearer of the party would be came to be.

Tinubu saw Buhari has a better option that could weed Jonathan out of office and gave him the honour to vie for the office of president but with a condition of making him his running mate. People however prevailed on Tinubu on the premise that a muslim muslim ticket would not work for the party, rather, a christian Southerner should run for the office of the vice-president instead.

On this note, Buhari requested that Tinubu should send there names of qualified persons who could run alongside him. Amazingly, Smart Tinubu sent only Osinbajo's name. Election came and went. APC won and was bestowed political power.

However, it is obvious that Tinubu is hurt for not obtaining the Vice President ticket in 2015. The fact that he has the ambition to become the president of Nigeria has also been a threat to the Buhari's faction. Hence, he has been on the watch list since the inception of the present administration. Also for Tinubu to have sent just a person's name as nominee for the office of the Vice President of Nigeria instead of three, Professor Yemi Osinbajo has been seen as a spy and underdog for Tinubu in the Villa.

Where am I going? The suspended acting chairman of EFCC, Ibrahim Magu is a favourite of Chief Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He was nominated by him. However, since he could not be rejected as nominee, the then Senate Leader, Saraki, who was in good terms with the president in 2015 had to find a way of limiting his power. Hence, his appointment as acting chairman and not chairman of the EFCC for many years.

Neglecting this claim by Magu that his case is like that of a dog eating dog, recall that some persons alleged that Ibrahim Magu had been working for both Tinubu and Osinbajo in the past years. This actually, I know is part of what did not sink down well in the tommy of the Buhari's faction.

Things however did not started spoiling last night (apologies to Bimbola Adelakun), removing Osinbajo as head of the N-Power Scheme, the sack of more than 100 of his workers, removal of Oshiomole as National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC and rejection of Ajimobi as replacement before his demise, excluding Tinubu from participating in the June, 2020 APC NEC meeting and other happenings in the party are clear indications that Tinubu is the real target. Magu and others are only victims of circumstances.
