Knocks, Kudos As CBN Okays Old Naira Notes

On Monday, both the Presidency and the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, finally bowed to pressure to end the two months Naira crisis in the country.

The apex bank, a few hours after the presidency absolved itself of blame, directed commercial banks to henceforth accept the N200, N500 and N1000 old naira notes as legal tender in line with the March 3 ruling of the Supreme Court.

This came about 24 hours to the ultimatum issued by some state governors, after which they would file contempt charges against the CBN and the Attorney-General of the Federation.

The apex’s bank decision was contained in a statement issued Monday night by the bank’s acting Director of Corporate Communications, Dr Isa Abdulmumin.

The statement added that the old naira notes are to remain legal tender till December 31 2023.

Ogbaloi Dismisses Alleged Obi Alliance

The Chairman of Labour Party (LP) in Edo, Kelly Ogbaloi, has dismissed claim that the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi is an alliance with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.

The social media has been inundated with claims that the party’s candidate in the just concluded presidential election, Peter Obi who was in Benin last Saturday, in company of the party’s chairman, Julius Abure, had a meeting with Governor Godwin Obaseki and the Secretary to the State Government, Osorodion Ogie.

Ogbaloi described such claim as unfounded, baseless, mere falsehood lacking in objectivity, logic and truth, describing any such as “evil alliance”.

A human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), has said that the 2023 presidential election was marred by result manipulations.

Falana stated this during an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today.

Other factors, according to the lawyer, that marred the elections included insecurity, late arrival of materials, violence and thuggary.

Recall INEC has declared Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the presidential election, but the two other leading political parties in the election, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP), have since rejected the results.

Falana said, “The presidential and National Assembly elections were marred by insecurity in many places, late arrival of materials, violence and thuggary and manipulation of the results.

“INEC has admitted that there were logistic and technological challenges. Nobody is saying that the election was perfectly conducted. There are challenges.

Controversy has been trailing the disappearance of a cashier of the Eat ‘N’ Go Limited, operating at the company’s Coldstone Creamery branch in Abule Ado, Moses Ojo, during his arraignment by the Lagos State Police Command at a Magistrate’s Court sitting in the Apapa area of the state.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the company suspected that its workers had been carrying out fraudulent transactions by using their accounts to trade with customers.

In a bid to trace those involved in the fraudulent transactions, it was learnt that the company reported the case to the police and during the investigation, the police arrested Ojo.
