Federal Government Prohibited From Retrying Orji Uzor Kalu

A Federal High Court in Nigeria has prohibited the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), from re-trying former Abia State Governor, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu.

The order was passed by justice Inyang Ekwo while delivering judgment in an application filed by the former governor seeking an Order of court prohibiting the EFCC from retrying him on a charge for which he had already been tried and convicted.

According to justice Inyang, "an order is hereby made prohibiting the Federal Government through the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission from retrying the applicant (Kalu) on charge no. FHC/ABJ/CR/56/2007 since there was no order in the judgment of the Supreme Court for the retrial of Orji Uzor Kalu".

The Presiding Judge, Justice Inyang Ekwo, asked the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC) to stop the planned retrial of Orji Uzor Kalu based on the N 7.1 billion money laundering charge earlier preferred against him.
