Check out The 7 Oldest Presidents In Africa

The adage which says "Age is just a number", still stands in the African continent. Aside from old men and women ruling in some private sectors, there are advanced individuals in government positions, including the Presidential seat.

Many citizens are of the view that old men occupying the President's seats are incapable because the official retirement age is 60 years. However, these men have shown selflessness, patriotism, and love for their country, despite their ages.

Who then are we referring to? I will share with you the oldest Presidents in Africa, in this article.

1. Paul Biya - Cameroon

Age: 88 years (February 13th, 1933)

Paul Biya is one of the oldest African Presidents. He has been the President of Cameroon since November 6th, 1982.

2. Evaristo Carvalho - Sao Tome and Principe

Age: 78 years

Evaristo Carvalho assumed office after he succeeded Manuel Pinto Da Costa, a two-time President of Sao Tome and Principe.

3. Alpha Conde - Guinea

Age: 83 years (4th March 1938)

Alpha Conde was elected as President of Guinea in 2010, after series of unsuccessful attempts. His assumption of office was historic since he became the first freely elected President in the country's history, and now one of the oldest African Presidents.

4. Alassane Ouattara - Ivory Coast

Age: 79 years (January 1st, 1942)

Ouattara became the President of the Rally of the Republicans (RDR), an Ivorian Political Party, in 1999. He won the 2010 elections and has governed since then.

5. Muhammadu Buhari - Nigeria

Age: 78 years (17th December 1942)

President Buhari previously served as Head of State from December 31st, 1983, to August 27th, 1985, after he took power in a Military Coup. He was elected as President under Democratic rule in 2015 and was also re-elected in 2019.

6. Nana Akufo-Addo - Ghana

Age: 77 years (29th March 1944)

He became the President in 2016 after defeating a younger predecessor, John Mahama. He had previously served the country as an Attorney General from 2001 to 2003, and Minister for Foreign Affairs from 2003 to 2007.

7. Abdelaziz Bouteflika - Algeria

Age: 84 years (March 2nd, 1937)

Abdelaziz Bouteflika is an Algerian politician who has been the first President of Algeria since 1999. He was Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1963 to 1979. He also served as President of the United Nations General Assembly.
