[Opinion] Why Valentine Ozigbo's Appeal Court's Victory Could End Soludo's Governorship Ambition

As the stage is gradually getting set for the November 6, 2021, Anambra state governorship election, many events in the state have continued to pose a threat to the political ambitions of some of the heavyweights in the governorship race. It should be recalled that before now, many people had expected that Senator Ugochukwu Uba, would fly the flag of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the November election.

This is due to a High Court judgment, the Upheld his nomination, and ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to publish his name as the candidate of the PDP for the Anambra 2021 governorship election. Despite his initial clearance by the INEC, the former Senator did not receive the backing of some of the party’s bigwigs at the national level.

His High Court’s victory was equally challenged by Valentine Ozigbo, who was nominated by another faction of the PDP in Anambra, and had been congratulated by many of the party’s heavyweights from other states. Today, the Appeal Court’s judgement has seen Valentine Ozigbo, declared the duly nominated candidate of the PDP, and an order that the INEC should substitute Senator Ugochukwu Uba with Ozigbo (source: Vanguard Newspaper).

This development has undoubtedly pitched Valentine Ozigbo against Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo as the major contenders for the Anambra 2021 governorship position. It should be recalled that Anambra state has been under the control of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) for about 16 years now, and the party’s candidate, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, is believed by many people, to be the favourite to win the November 6, governorship election.

Despite that the state is under the control of the APGA, one cannot rule out the fact that the PDP remains the dominant party in the entire South-East region of Nigeria. As such, it is arguable that the Appeal Court’s victory of Valentine Ozigbo could mark the end of the road for the governorship ambitions of Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo. This is due to the likelihood that the party’s national body of the PDP, could use its might to battle the APGA in Anambra.

Arguably, the division of the APGA into factions has not equally helped the governorship ambitions of Soludo, a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria. It should be recalled that the leadership crisis that is currently rocking the APGA poses a threat to his candidacy for the election. As such, the victory of Valentine Ozigbo over Senator Ugochukwu Uba, may have offered the people an alternative choice that could end the governorship ambition of Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo at the polls in November.
