Senate applauds Adeboye and the RCCG for rehabilitating a N188 million road in Osun

The Senate has praised the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) and Pastor Enoch Adeboye, its General Overseer, for repairing the Ife-Ifewara Road at a cost of N188 million.

The Senate has also ordered Messrs. Cartil Construction Nigeria Limited, which abandoned the project after collecting the mobilization fee, to return N140 million.

The upper chamber passed the resolutions after the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions Chairman, Senator Ayo Akinyelure, presented his recommendations in plenary on Wednesday.

"That the Senate commends the RCCG for relieving the hardship of the Ife-Ifewara community by repairing the Ife-Ifewara road project in Osun State," according to one of the Senate resolutions.

"That the Senate urges the FMW & H to formally cancel the contract for the road project given to Cartil Construction Nigeria Limited in 2010 and abandoned since 2011, and to reclaim the N140 million paid to the firm.

"That the Senate urges the FMW & H to deny the RCCG any reimbursement for repairing the Ife-Ifewara road since the Church did so as a social obligation assistance to Osun State."

The RCCG had petitioned the Senate, requesting that the federal government recoup funds previously given to a contractor that later abandoned the project.

The Committee's conclusions and observations included "that the 15-kilometer long Ife-Ifewara Road is a state route inside Osun State rather than a federal road."

"The Federal Ministry of Works and Housing granted Cartil Construzioni Nigeria Limited the contract to repair the road in 2010, since the project was a zonal intervention project for a former member of the National Assembly that was housed in the Ministry's budget.

"Cartil was paid N99,414,115.76 for the first intermediate statement and N52,094,785.46 for the second interim statement... However, the contractor only completed 26.21 percent of the project and stopped working on it.

"Despite not requesting permission or approval from the Osun State Government or the Federal Government of Nigeria, the RCCG generously restored the road between 2016 and 2019 as part of its commitment to the development of Osun State and Nigeria, paying N188, 440,342.00.
