Opinion: Sad Memories of Emeka Ihedioha's Removal From Office Have Been Brought Back By Insecurity

Emeka Ihedioha's removal from office as the Executive Governor of Imo State on January 20, 2020 arguably came to many as a shock. This is due to the obvious lapses in the Supreme Court judgment that sacked him. Ihedioha's removal brought to an end, the hope for a better Imo among many residents of the state, and sparked wide protests both in Owerri and Abuja, with demands for a review of the judgement. However, despite the number of protests staged by concerned Nigerians, and Ihedioha's approach of the Supreme Court for a review of the judgment, the earlier decision of the Apex Court was upheld.

While many have continued to find it difficult to forget about that unpopular judgment, the level of insecurity in Imo has not helped matter. It can be argued that the level of insecurity in the state is worse than what is obtainable in any other state within the Southeast region. Senator Hope Uzodinma who happened to be the Governor and Chief Security Officer of the state, has arguably failed to tackle this insecurity in a manner that will boost public confidence in his administration. Instead, the Governor found refuge in Abuja, while his state was boiling. Just recently, nothing less than four innocent and unarmed people have been killed within the state capital alone, and Senator Hope Uzodinma is yet to utter a word concerning these reckless killings of his own people.

The ugly situation of things in Imo State has undoubtedly brought back the sad memories of Honourable Emeka Ihedioha's removal as the Executive Governor of the state. While Ihedioha was in power, Imo witnessed a revival of different sectors of the state's economy, and improved security of lives and properties of citizens within and outside Owerri, the state capital. It can be recalled that Imo under Emeka Ihedioha was always on the media for positive reasons. However, the Imo State of today is often on the media for things that are regrettable, thus bringing back the sad memories of Ihedioha's removal from office.
