[Opinion] Anambra Governorship Election, And The Test of APC’s Popularity In The South-East

The All Progressives Congress (APC), as the ruling party at the federal level, undoubtedly has a national spread, and remains one of the most popular political parties in Nigeria. With massive defections of members of the opposition to the APC, the party has continued to wax stronger. However, despite the power and influence of the APC, it still struggles when it comes to the South-East region.

There is no doubt that the APC controls 2 out of the 5 states in the South-East. However, the party was only able to take hold of the states through defection of the Ebonyi state Governor, Dave Umahi, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the Supreme Court’s judgment that brought in Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo state. Since the PDP lost these two states to the APC, some politicians loyal to the Governors, have equally joined the APC.

In Anambra, the story is not different as some notable politicians in the state, have also defected to the APC ahead of the forthcoming November 6, 2021, governorship election. This has undoubtedly swelled the ranks of the party in the South-East, and Anambra ahead of the state’s governorship election. However, despite the defection of some South-East politicians to the APC, the Anambra 2021 governorship election, would prove to be a true test of the popularity of the party in the South-East region.

It can be argued that the South-East people, are more inclined towards the PDP, with Anambra state being dominantly controlled by the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). However, the recent takeover of two states in the region, and defection of some Anambra politicians to the APC, has given the impression the party is becoming more popular in the region. With the Anambra state governorship election coming up in less than 3 weeks from now, the popularity of the APC in the South-East will be put to a test.

Arguably, the Anambra is a microcosm of the South-East region, and how the APC performed in the state’s governorship election can be used to assess its chances of performing well in the entire South-East region in 2023. This is due to the fact that just as the APC has never won governorship election in Anambra, the party was outclassed by the PDP in the region during the 2015, and 2019 presidential elections.
