On the 5th of July 2021, the southern governor's forum met in Lagos to deliberate on the issues affecting the zone and the way forward. The forum deliberated extensively on the security challenges, constitutional amendment, petroleum industry bill among others. At the end of the exercise, The Southern governor's forum reached an agreement that Southern Nigeria should be allowed to produce the next presidential flag bearer of PDP in 2023, in the spirit of fairness, equity, and justice, adding that, PDP will get the full backing of Southerners in the 2023 general elections if the zone is given the opportunity. PDP is very strong in Southern Nigeria, they are currently controlling nine (9) out of seventeen (17) States in the zone. the following are some of the reasons PDP should zone President to the south:
1. Fairness: People's Democratic Party, PDP has been getting the majority of votes from Southern Nigeria since 1999, therefore, to be fair and just, it is necessary to allow the zone to produce the next presidential flagbearer. There are speculations that the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC might zone its presidential position to the region too.
2. Marginalization: the Southerners have been complaining of being cheated for decades now when it comes to sharing political offices in Nigeria. With their son or daughter as a president, they will be able to attract more developmental projects to their region. A southern President would Foster the unity of Nigeria because some aggrieved citizens who have been onlookers will contribute their quarters to the National development.
3. Innovation: a Southern Presidency might bring innovations to Nigeria's economy and political sector because they may want to rule for eight years (8) and as such, the government might decide to focus on science and technology which in return could bring good governance.
