General Mamman Vatsa was born in December,1940. He was a Nigerian soldier and also a poet who later served as a Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. He was a childhood friend to Ibrahim Babangida and both men attended the same school. Vatsa attended the Government College Bida, Niger State. In December, 1962, he enrolled in Nigerian Military Training College.
Vatsa and other cadets of Nigerian Military Training College who have completed their preparatory cadet training were sent to foreign countries for more military training and commissioning. Vatsa graduated from the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Nigerian Army.
Vatsa participated fully in Nigerian civil war as a Commanding Officer of 21 battalion and Immediately after the war in 1970, Vatsa became a tutor at the Nigerian Defence Academy Zaria and later a Principal Staff Officer at Army Headquarters.
He commanded the 30 Infantry Brigade Ogoja untill July 1975, and later 13 Infantry Brigade Calabar until 1976 and Brigade of Guards until 1979.
Vatsa held many positions in the Nigerian Military before, he plotted a coup against General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida's military government. Mamman Vatsa's coup against Babangida failed and he was arrested together with his co-coupists and court-martialed.
He was executed in March, 1986 by General Ibrahim Babangida's military government, after a military tribunal found him guilty of the offence.
