British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Wednesday congratulated Nigeria's new president-elect, Bola Tinubu, on his victory in an election which has been disputed by opposition parties there.
Taking to his verified Twitter page on the evening of Wednesday, March 1, 2023, the British PM congratulated the president-elect and emphasised that the relationship between the United Kingdom and Nigeria remains strong.
“The UK-Nigeria relationship remains strong. I look forward to working together to grow our security and trade ties, opening up opportunities for businesses and creating prosperity in both our countries”.
Tinubu was declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission on Wednesday.
The presidential candidate of APC, bola Ahmed Tinubu won the election by defeating Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, Peter Obi of the Labour Party, Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party and others.
Tinubu polled 8,794,726 votes to defeat Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 6,984,520 votes
Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) polled 6,101,533 votes, while Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) scored 1,496,687 votes to occupy the third and fourth positions, respectively.
