The Ooni of Ife is one of the highly respected and revered kings among the Yoruba people and in Nigeria at large. The Yoruba people predominantly occupy the Southwestern part of Nigeria. The exemplary monarch of Ile-Ife recently advised other monarchs concerning leadership and what it entails.
Speaking during his recent interview, Oba Adeyeye said, "I was young when I got on the throne, I was in my 40s, and I met some kings that are older than me age-wise. Although I have become a king, I have not become an older person because of my age, but because I am seated on the throne of our ancestors. There is a clear difference between respecting Ooni Adeyeye and respecting the Ooni of Ife, they are two different things, and I deciphered them. There are three things I ask God for, God has made me a king, but I have to tread cautiously for me to get older. I need to respect the elderly kings and the kings that are yet to be crowned. Also, I wish to be very old on the throne. There is a difference between getting old as an individual and getting old on the throne. If I can get these three things, they are blessings from the king of kings."
Explaining further, Oba Adeyeye added, "I checked around and honoured kings, I gave greater honour to Kings that are old in age, and I gave the greatest honour to the Kings that are old on the thrones."
Discussing why he visited various kings within and outside Nigeria after he was crowned the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye said, "It is important to know certain things about your life, regardless of the position you find yourself. Firstly, put supremacy aside. In a very cosmopolitan environment, a republican race, it is difficult to sell supremacy so put supremacy aside. Supremacy is not going to help the race because they are highly opinionated people. Let everyone come together and let your monarchy serve the people. That is the essence of a monarchy."
